When I moved to Singapore as an expat, I thought making friends as an adult would be straightforward. Go to dinners, meet people, exchange numbers. Simple, right?
It wasn't. Dinners came and went. Conversations were pleasant but forgettable. Numbers were exchanged but rarely texted. Months passed and I still felt like a stranger in a city full of people.
Then something shifted. I joined a weekend pickleball group. Went on a nature walk with strangers. And suddenly, between the rallies and the trails, something real happened — we actually connected.
Not because we sat across a table making small talk, but because we were doing something together. Laughing at missed shots. Helping each other up a steep path. Sharing water at the top of a hill.
